"Monte-Carlo Million Dollar Super 4"
Although the Principality is traditionally known for gaming, culture and leisure, it is often forgotten that sports are also deeply entrenched in its history.
Very early on, the Société des Bains de Mer included sports in the distractions it offered to its clients, with combat sports right alongside water sports, golfing and tennis. Monte-Carlo has hosted pigeon shooting since 1872, international fencing tournaments, and boxing since the early 1900s.
In 1912, the Principality had the privilege of witnessing Georges Carpentier‘s win during the European Middleweight Championships; his victory over British contestant Jim Sullivan boosted Carpentier to national hero status. Everybody remembers the fights between Carlos Monzon and Nino Benvenuti, which really impressed people in the 1970s.
In 2006, boxing made a comeback in Monaco. In 2013, the year of Monte-Carlo SBM’s 150th anniversary, the group had to organise an exceptional boxing tournament. That’s why Monte-Carlo SBM, in collaboration with Golden Gloves, decided to organise on 30 March the Monte-Carlo Million Dollar Super 4, a fantastic tournament with four of the best boxers in the world. The finalists Denis GRACHEV (Russia) and Edwin RODRIGUEZ (Dominican Republic) will fight in an extraordinary match on 13 July for a million-dollar prize.
In view of the success of the first part of the Million Dollar Super Four, during which other matches were also held, a more ambitious tournament will be held on 13 July under the high patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. Not only will there be the long-awaited final with the winners of the “Super 4″ qualifying rounds, but also a European Middleweight Championship and most importantly a WBA Super Lightweight World Championship as well as a WBC World Silver Light Heavyweight Title.
Early in the evening, the up and coming young Monegasque boxer Hugo Micallef will step into the ring. Micallef has been selected for the next Olympic Games and won the fight on 30 March against Thomas Hiab of PCN, a club from Nice.
Programme :
* Wednesday 10 July – Boxers’ training – starting 3pm
Watch boxers with World Championship, Super 4 and European titles as well as amateur fighters while they train. Each boxer will train for around 20 to 30 minutes.
* Friday 12 July at 2:30 pm - Boxers’ weigh-in (Public event) – Allée François Blanc, Monaco

"Manon" by The Royal Ballet, London, at the Grimaldi Forum
Don't miss "L'Histoire de Manon" (usually referred to simply as "Manon" in English) by the Royal Ballet, London, with four special performances on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 June at 8.30 pm and Saturday 29 June at 4 pm and 8.30 pm.
"L’Histoire de Manon"
Choreography: Kenneth MacMillan
Music: Jules Massenet
Orchestrated by: Martin Yates
Original compilation by Leighton Lucas in collaboration with Hilda Gaunt
Stage sets: Nicholas Georgiadis
Lighting: John B. Read
Duration: 2 hours 40 mins
"L’histoire de Manon," a ballet in three acts by the great English choreographer Kenneth MacMillan is not just one of the masterpieces of the Royal Ballet, for which it was created … this work is part of the worldwide classical repertoire!
It tells of the consuming passion of a student, Des Grieux, for the beautiful Manon Lescaut – a passionate story full of violence, devotion and tragedy.
The dramatic choreography borders on virtuosity and requires the two principal roles to be performed by exceptional dancers. MacMillan's sense of detail and dramaturgy creates a striking evocation of the atmosphere of 18th century Paris, revealing a world of filth and poverty through the richness of the characters.
The sets and costumes are wonderful and the libretto, with music by Massenet (not to be confused with Massenet's opera on the same theme) is melodic and full of emotion.
To reiterate … "L’histoire de Manon" is a modern classic ….
Prices from 160€ to 35€
