The 4th EcoWatt scheme is being extended to the whole of the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur (PACA) Region
RTE and its partners are launching the PACA EcoWatt scheme, operated from its regional control centre in Marseille.
With 15,000 "EcoWatters" and 71 commitment charters signed by public and private establishments, the EcoWatt scheme represents a real community of eco-citizens who are aware of the need to control their electricity consumption in winter, particularly during the peak consumption times of 6 to 8 p.m.
The fourth scheme has been extended to cover the whole of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region - EcoWatt Provence Azur will now become EcoWatt PACA.
This campaign calls for moderation in energy consumption in the whole of the PACA; previously, it was centred on the Var region. Since 2010, EcoWatt has been managing peak periods of energy consumption in the PACA region by inviting individuals, municipalities and businesses to voluntarily reduce their electricity use, especially during cold weather.
The EcoWatt scheme is based on RTE's ability to detect sensitive situations with regard to electricity supply. To do this, RTE needs to make forecasts, using mainly hypotheses of consumption, production and the state of the electricity network.
The weather also plays an essential role in electricity consumption – a drop of one degree (which is a frequent occurrence) in the PACA region leads to a rise in consumption of 220 Megawatts, the equivalent of the consumption by a town such as Aix-En Provence.
The EcoWatt scheme is therefore being promoted again this winter, with the aim of continuing to win public support, especially at the peak times of 6 to 8 p.m.
