Albert I of Monaco: Science, Enlightenment and Peace
The 17th European Heritage Day will focus on the importance of the work of Prince Albert I.
Visitors will be able to learn about Albert I's accomplishments in areas as varied as oceanography, palaeontology and motor sport, as well as the reorganisation of Monegasque intuitional life and urban improvement and modernisation works.
The European Heritage Days were initiated by the Council of Europe twenty years ago and are a major cultural and heritage event in Europe. They involve 50 countries and allow 20 million visitors to discover more than 30,000 different sites.
In 2011, the Principality's European Heritage Day was enjoyed by more than 30,000 people. It enabled the public to discover 37 sites, some of which were very unusual, had opened especially for the occasion and had record attendance figures.
This year, in addition to religious buildings and institutional establishments, sites linked to Prince Albert I's "works of science, enlightenment and peace" will also form part of the programme.
