"From Chagall to Malevich – The Revolution of the Avant-Garde" at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco

In the summer of 2015, the Grimaldi Forum will present an exhibition as part of Russian Year in Monaco. Russian year will take place throughout 2015

The exhibition "From Chagall to Malevich – The Revolution of the Avant-Garde" will be held at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco from 12 July to 6 September 2015.

This wide-ranging exhibition will bring together the major works of leading artists who represent the avant-garde in Russia between 1905 and 1930.

These artists were the forerunners of major changes in the way of conceiving, seeing and representing reality.   Although an academic approach was still prevalent, these young artists in Moscow and Saint Petersburg could not be satisfied with this vision of the past

Various different movements emerged, outside all conventions, leading to schools and movements that illustrate the energy and richness of creative activity at the beginning of the 20th century, such as Impressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Cubo-Futurism, Rayonism, Suprematism and Constructivism, expressing unknown forms of representation that were inextricably linked with their era.

This, in essence, is the great story of the "avant-garde" artists who overturned centuries of a conventional, academic approach.

To present a subject of this magnitude, the curator of the exhibition, Jean-Louis Prat, has obtained some important loans from several of the major Russian institutions, including the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, the Pushkin Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Other major Russian museums, such as the Nizhny Novgorod, Astrakhan, Krasnodar and Tula museums, which benefitted from deposits of works of art at the beginning of the October Revolution in 1917, were also approached and agreed to some special loans.  Some of the great European museums, such as the Pompidou Centre in Paris, also feature on this prestigious list.

This exhibition will bring together more than 150 major works.  A richly illustrated technical catalogue in two languages, with essays by specialists in the avant-garde artists, as well as descriptions and bibliographies of the artists and the various movements of this era, will be published for the occasion.

The 2015 Summer Exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco

"From Chagall to Malevich – The Revolution of the Avant-Garde" at the Grimaldi Forum from 12 July to 6 September 2015

Every summer, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco mounts a large-scale themed exhibition devoted to a major artistic movement, a heritage- or civilisation-related topic, a public or private collection or any other subject that expresses the renewal of artistic creation.

From 12 July to 6 September 2015, the Principality's congress and cultural centre, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, is presenting one of the highlights of Russian Year in Monaco.

The exhibition "From Chagall to Malevich – The Revolution of the Avant-Garde" will bring together major works by the great artists of the avant-garde in Russia from 1905 to 1930.  These artists created an unprecedented modernistic style, which was a total departure from anything that had ever been seen before.  They included Natan Altman, Marc Chagall, Alexander Shevchenko,Vassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Jean Pougny, Alexander Rodtchenko, Wladislaw Strzeminski, Vladimir Tatlin, Ilia Chashnik, and others.

This exhibition will bring together more than 150 major works.  It will be accompanied by a richly illustrated technical catalogue in two languages, with essays by specialists in the avant-garde artists, as well as descriptions and bibliographies of the artists and the various movements of this era.

"From Chagall to Malevich" Exhibition in Monaco

The exhibition "From Chagall to Malevich" will be on display from 12 July to 6 September 2015 at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco

The Grimaldi Forum's large-scale 2105 summer exhibition, held as part of Russian Year in the Principality of Monaco, is one of the key events of this celebration.

This exhibition brings together 150 major works by great artists who were part of the avant-garde movement in Russia.  Various different artistic trends and schools emerged between 1905 and 1930, inspired by the energy and creative richness of the early 20th century – Impressionism was followed by Cubism, Futurism, Cubo-Futurism, Rayonism, Suprematism, Constructivism and others.

Russian artists created an unprecedented type of modernity that was completely different from anything that had been known before, overturning centuries of convention and academicism.

The exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum has a very special character, thanks to the loan of works from Russia that until now have remained in the collections of the national galleries.  These remarkable loans are in addition to loans from various great European museums.

"Celebrate the Exhibition" ("Expo en fête") at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco

On 20 July, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco is treating the public with "Celebrate the Exhibition"

As part of celebrations for its 15th anniversary, the Grimaldi Forum has decided to treat its art-loving public – in the widest sense of the word – by organising a special day on 20 July based on the major summer exhibition "From Chagall to Malevich, the Revolution of the Avant-Garde."

Firstly, for this anniversary day, admission to the exhibition will be free and open to all.  There will also be numerous activities and artistic performances.  Quite simply, the summer exhibition will take on another, unusual dimension and will extend its theme to other artistic disciplines.  On that day, the public will be able to follow guided visits across avant-garde Russia, listen to folk tales and legends and extracts of music and watch dance solos related to the works on display.

To make the event a total surprise, the Grimaldi Forum has given carte blanche to young people and local artists.  Ornella Corvi, mezzo soprano, accompanied by pianist Valeria Monfort-Suchkova, will evoke four of the great names of Russian music from the early 20th century - Ravel, Poulenc, Mussorgsky and Rachmaninov.  Gaétan Morlotti, a former soloist with the Ballets de Monte Carlo, will bring Chagall's works to life with dance interludes throughout the day.  To satisfy their curiosity, visitors will have the choice of taking part in guided tours or simply strolling around and being surprised.  Young children will love the traditional stories presented by Larissa Tipikina.  Finally, after the exhibition, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., children and adults will be able to enjoy an unusual bird's eye view of the Grimaldi Forum and the Larvotto district from a hot air balloon tethered on the building's esplanade.
