H.E. Mr. Patrick Medecin, Ambassador of Monaco to Japan, visited Nagasaki from 4th to 6th October 2012.
During his visit in Nagasaki, the Ambassador Patrick Medeci attended the Night View Convention Summit, accompanied by Miss Tomoe Matsunaga from Monaco Tourist Authority's representative office in Japan. At this Summit, Monaco was recognised, with Hong Kong and Nagasaki, as one of the three cities with the best night-time view in the world.
In a speech to the audience, the Ambassador of Monaco emphasised the importance of lighting in the city for the Monegasque authorities.
This visit also enabled Ambassador Medecin to meet with the Vice-Governor of the Prefecture of Nagasaki, Mr. Keinosuke Tanaka, the Mayor of Nagasaki, Mr. Tomihisa Taue and His Grace Archbishop Joseph Mitsuaki Takami of Nagasaki. These discussions highlighted many similarities between Nagasaki and Monaco: both have ports surrounded by mountains, both cities have a long tradition of openness to the rest of the world and both have a very strong Christian tradition. Future cooperation projects were discussed, particularly peace-building activities.
Finally, H.E. Mr. Patrick Medecin visited the Atomic Bomb Museum, a place in memory of the atomic bomb of 9th August 1945, which caused more than 75,000 deaths, to which must be added the deaths that occurred in the following years due to illnesses linked to the nuclear explosion. The Ambassador was received at the National Peace Memorial as a representative of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince and the people of Monaco, where he paid homage to the victims.
