"Sharks" – A Sensational Exhibition at Monaco's Oceanographic Museum

From 8 June, World Oceans Day, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is offering visitors a sensory exhibition and a chance to meet sharks. Through a new visiting experience, the public will be invited to enjoy a real adventure, to overcome their prejudices and discover the true nature of these lords of the sea.

In our imagination, sharks are often limited to a succession of terrifying images, the legacy of Hollywood thriller movies. By presenting an exhibition on this subject, the Oceanographic Museum hopes to overcome their bad reputation. Sharks kill less than ten people per year, causing far fewer deaths than jellyfish (50), mosquitoes (800,000) or road accidents (1.2 million).

These great predators are essential for the health of ecosystems, but today they are under threat. Each year, more than 100 million sharks are killed by Man. To raise public awareness of the need to protect them, the Oceanographic Museum has chosen to appeal to our emotions:

* DISCOVERING AND OBSERVING EACH OTHER: face to face in the aquariums
Quite naturally, the tour begins with the aquariums. When visitors take the stairs, they will be bathed in a soft blue light, like rays of sunshine, which penetrate the surface and diffuse a calming glow below the water. On Level -2, they will be charmed by the Shark Lagoon, a giant aquarium containing 450,000 litres of water. There, they will find several specimens – from the imposing 3m-long nurse shark to the impressive black tip sharks, as well as some new occupants, the grey reef sharks.

* GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER: interactivity at the heart of the discovery process
There's a fun approach to strolling around the rooms in the Museum. A huge digital fresco, 20 m long and 3 m high and resembling an aquarium, will reveal the biological and behavioural characteristics of around ten different species. The sharks are shown life size, and will swim around in front of the visitors, who can bring them to life using interactive controls.

To show the public the special structure of a shark's jaws and teeth, several large models will be on show in a "Gallery of Smiles." Visitors will be invited to use their sense of touch and will be allowed to place their hands on the impressively large jaw of a tiger shark – up to 55 cm high with the mouth open. Looking through a porthole, visitors can also immerse themselves in a world without sharks. A frightening simulation!

* GETTING CLOSE TO EACH OTHER: a special moment with the sharks
To bring about a reconciliation between humans and sharks, the Oceanographic Museum decided to organise a meeting with sharks at the end of the visit. This will take place gently and respectfully in a touch pool, built especially for the occasion. After observing the different species in the aquariums and getting to know them better, visitors who wish to can put aside their nervousness and slide their hand into the water to stroke the back or side of a pyjama shark, striped leopard shark or starry smooth-hound. A unique experience that will enable them to play an active part in the discovery and learning process.

* MAKING THE MAGIC OF THIS MEETING LAST EVEN LONGER, thanks to art!
The Museum is renewing the dialogue between Art and Science begun by its Founder, Prince Albert Ist, by exhibiting works by young Asian artists on the theme of sharks. These works have been created especially for the occasion, and will be on show in the Salon d’Honneur (Level 0). They will invite visitors to be amazed but also to question themselves on the relationship between Man and the oceans.

The Museum is open every day (with the exception of 25 December and the weekend of the Formula 1 Grand Prix).
