Since its establishment in 1960, initiated by the desire of H.S.H. the Prince Rainier III to protect the Mediterranean Sea, the Scientific Centre of Monaco has become an internationally recognized organization in environmental and biological research.
Since its establishment in 1960, initiated by the desire of H.S.H. the Prince Rainier III to protect the Mediterranean Sea, the Scientific Centre of Monaco has become an internationally recognized organization in environmental and biological research.
Thanks to its skills in biodiversity and biology, and in particular its skills in marine biomineralisation and symbiosis since 1990, the C.S.M. has made important discoveries by studying the function of coralline ecosystems (tropical and Mediterranean) in regards to global climatic changes.

The C.S.M. has acquired an international indisputable status by the quality of its scientific work in the field of the marine ecosystem. Today, Monaco is placed 8th in the worlds publication numbers in the field of coralline physiology, and the C.S.M. is the second biggest laboratory dedicated to corals in the world, right behind the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Recently, the C.S.M. has started to work on essential documents about economic evaluation for politicians and policy makers in order to enable a scientific perusal.
