H.S.H. CROWN PRINCE ALBERT PRESENTS MAYOR GIULIANI WITH MONACO'S DONATION TO TWIN TOWERS RELIEF FUND

Size Doesn’t Matter as Tiny Principality Raises Over $700,000
To Support Families of New York's Uniformed Services

NEW YORK- (October 23, 2001) Through the legacy of American-born Princess Grace, the tiny Principality of Monaco and the United States have shared a long-lasting and enduring friendship.Today, that heartfelt bond was made poignantly clear when H.S.H. Prince Albert, the son of TT.SS.HH. Princess Grace and Prince Rainier and heir to the throne of Monaco, presented New York City Mayor Giuliani with the proceeds of the Principality's September 11th Solidarity Fund.

The local residents, including a large number of Americans living there, and the businesses of Monaco, an independent nation on the Mediterranean no larger than Central Park, donated over $700,000 to the Mayor's Twin Towers Relief Fund, to assist, support, and recognize the families of members of New York City's uniformed services. The proceeds also included a $200,000 donation by the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, a New York-based organization dedicated to supporting performing artists in America. The sum represented 50% of the net proceeds of its annual charity awards gala that was held in New York last night.

Following the presentation at City Hall, H.S.H. Prince Albert toured the Ground Zero area to show support to the firefighters, police, and rescue workers. He also visited the Pier 94 Family Center to show his sympathy to the victim's families.

“The attacks that occurred on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacks not on New York alone but attacks on freedom-loving people all over the world,” Prince Albert told the Mayor. “The example of the American spirit remains an inspiration to all of us in Monaco. As we join with the United States in this time of sorrow, we hold dear our long-lasting and intimate friendship with America, her people and her ideals.”

For over forty years, Monaco has had representative offices in New York and has collaborated with the United States on numerous business and charitable endeavors, humanitarian causes and cultural exchanges. In addition, Monaco enjoys the reputation as one of America’s beloved tourist destinations. Prince Albert not only attended college in New England but also lived and worked in New York City.
