MONACO BRAKES FOR NEW YORKERS: HISTORIC RACING CARS OF GRAND PRIX FAME TO BE DISPLAYED

Exhibition of Classic Automobiles Part of “Monaco Takes New York”

NEW YORK - April 7, 2003 - Gentlemen, you may drool, but please don't kick the tires while you're at it.

As part of the upcoming "Monaco Takes New York", a weeklong celebration throughout New York City showcasing the very best of the Principality, four of the world's most glamorous racing cars will be displayed in the courtyard of the New York Palace Hotel from April 28 - May 2. Free to the general public, the exhibition is a sampling of four historic automobiles representative of the legendary legacy of the Monaco Grand Prix - an annual event synonymous with the glamour and passion of Formula One. Some of the most extraordinary automobiles ever built, these machines represent the evolution of Formula One and are on loan from two prominent collectors.

Following are the automobiles that will be on display the dates of April 28 - May 2*:

· After driving the 1960 Cooper Coventry Climax Formula One racing car to six Grand Prix victories during the course of the season, racing star Jack Brabham won the sport's 1960 World Championship. With its lightweight, rear-engine configuration, the Cooper represented an entire new philosophy in Grand Prix car design.

· Driven by such racing legends as Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson, a team of these 1978 Lotus 79 Formula One racing cars won the World F1 Championship in 1978. Its sleek body proudly displays the first example of aerodynamic ground effects to be used on a racing car.

· The basic design for this 1931 Bugatti Type 54 dates back to the 1920s, but the carmaker sought to compete with the more high-powered and sophisticated designs of the early 1930s. This being the case, the car was fitted with a five-liter, eight-cylinder engine which basically overpowered the frame - with often tragic results, hence its nickname The Widowmaker!

· A predecessor to so many great Ferraris to follow is the 1950 Ferrari 166 SL. With its awe-inspiring, 12-cylinder supercharged motor, this particular model was driven by such Grand Prix legends as Juan-Manual Fangio, Froilan Gonzales and Prince Bira of Siam.

Additional spectacular events scheduled for "Monaco Takes New York" include performances of Cinderella by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and a week of delectable Monégasque lunches at the acclaimed Le Cirque 2000 specially-prepared by visiting chef Sylvain Etievant of Monaco's Hotel de Paris. In addition, the New York Palace Hotel is marking this occasion by offering a two-day package that includes two tickets to Les Ballets' performance at BAM and lunch for two at Le Cirque 2000. The package starts at just $495 per couple.
