"Views of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia" ("Regards sur le Ballet Royal du Cambodge") by the photographer Alain Hanel from 12 March to 8 April 2014 as part of the Monaco Spring Arts Festival ("Printemps des Arts")
The young female dancers of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia symbolise a culture that almost disappeared under Pol Pot's repressive regime. These guardians of the temples of Angkor are perpetuating the history of this ballet, which dates back more than a hundred years and was revived in 1979 after the fall of the tyrant.
Only photography could accurately depict this mystical form of choreography, for which the dancers have to train for many years. Their faces are expressionless, as modesty is very important, and no emotion is shown. The slow movements are associated with divinity.
Thirty or so large-format photographs are on show from 12 March to 8 April 2014 on the three levels of the Métropole Shopping Centre in Monte-Carlo.
They were created as part of the Monte-Carlo Spring Arts Festival ("Printemps des Arts") at two special shows performed at the Sporting d'été in Monte-Carlo in March 2013.
