That is why, in June 2006, the Sovereign Prince created the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Its mission is to identify and support high-priority, emblematic projects, to accelerate implementation and achieve tangible results all over the world with regard to the sustainable and equitable management of natural resources.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation acts to protect the environment and promote sustainable development at a global level. The Foundation's activities are concentrated on three main areas: climate change and renewable energies, biodiversity, and water and desertification. The Foundation supports projects in three main geographical regions: the Mediterranean basin, the polar regions and the least-developed countries.

The Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority is working in cooperation with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, notably in the "Monaco Carbon Offsetting" programme, to offer partners and clients the opportunity of offsetting greenhouse gas emissions related to their activities.

"Monaco Carbon Offsetting" is a voluntary, non-profit-making programme for reducing and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions. It is aimed at individuals, businesses, organisations and communities.

Here are some of the concrete measures that have been implemented :

• The "A birth = a tree" reforestation programme,
• Quality management and ISO 9001 and 14001 certification,
• Awareness raising for the general public with monthly lecture-debates on ecology and the environment – the "Green Thursdays.",
• Gradual replacement of the vehicle fleet by clean vehicles, electric or hybrid,
• Free parking for electric vehicles.

Since its establishment in 1960, initiated by the desire of H.S.H. the Prince Rainier III to protect the Mediterranean Sea, the Scientific Centre of Monaco has become an internationally recognized organization in environmental and biological research.

Thanks to its skills in biodiversity and biology, and in particular its skills in marine biomineralisation and symbiosis since 1990, the C.S.M. has made important discoveries by studying the function of coralline ecosystems (tropical and Mediterranean) in regards to global climatic changes.

The C.S.M. has acquired an international indisputable status by the quality of its scientific work in the field of the marine ecosystem. Today, Monaco is placed 8th in the worlds publication numbers in the field of coralline physiology, and the C.S.M. is the second biggest laboratory dedicated to corals in the world, right behind the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Recently, the C.S.M. has started to work on essential documents about economic evaluation for politicians and policy makers in order to enable a scientific perusal.

Below are some of the main examples:

- Cleanliness of the stretch of water is guaranteed on a permanent basis via a special contract.
- Staff training in the fight against pollution.
- Provision of toilets and showers to users.
- Implementation of an ambitious recovery policy of grey and black water.
- Obligation to use environmentally friendly products.
- Waste collection up to three times per day in the port area.
- Installation of containers for batteries, used oil, and for oil and fuel filters.
- Policy to reduce energy and water consumption.
- Declaration form for disposing of refuse in the ports of Monaco.

For the last renovation on the embankment, ecological wood composite was chosen instead of exotic wood.
