"Mazeppa" at the Monte-Carlo Opera
It was Voltaire who, in his History of Charles XII, made the character of Mazeppa known in the West. Thanks to a poem by Alexander Pushkin, Poltava, it also became known in Russia.
Between 1882 and 1884, Tchaikovsky, at the peak of his maturity, composed a work with incredibly beautiful monologues.
As always in the operas of this great symphonist, the orchestra plays a major role. It brings a variety of colours and climates and is an essential element of the décor.
