Rafael Nadal is the defending champion
You will recall that, last year, for the 7th consecutive year, the Spanish player Rafael Nadal became the first player in the history of the Open to win the same tournament seven consecutive times. "We are very proud to have written a new chapter in the history of our tournament and the world history of tennis with this exceptional player
," stated the Director of the Tournament.
He continued, "The players have demonstrated their strong commitment to our tournament in recent years, offering the public an exceptional line-up. This 106th tournament looks just as promising and we are looking forward optimistically to 19 March, the closing date for entries, to announce the definitive list. So, as long as nothing unforeseen happens, most of the ten best players in the world will be present at the 2012 Monte Carlo Rolex Masters
Some of the innovations for the 106th tournament …
The Director of the Tournament, keen to make conditions for the players more comfortable, decided to group together the services for players - changing rooms, gym, medical service and catering - in the same building. Many of the ATP players attend throughout the year in order to benefit from the Monte Carlo Country Club's facilities, especially when preparing for their American and Australian tours. That's the case for world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, a Monegasque resident, who has just distinguished himself at the Australian Open in a memorable final against Rafael Nadal.
New activity areas
Also of note - new activity areas on courts 19 and 20. These are dedicated to the youngest spectators, who continue to show a growing interest in the Monegasque tournament, and ever increasing enthusiasm. This new area will make it possible to offer a large number of games and activities, and, for the first time, a "real" tennis court. With this new area, the organizers wanted to fulfill their educational role, so the tournament can become an effective way of promoting tennis to young people.
A giant screen
Also, a new-generation giant screen will be set up on the Court des Princes (Princes' Court) from Friday onwards and after the doubles matches, to broadcast the matches on Center Court live. This will please the large number of spectators who do not have access to Center Court.
A packed schedule of events
In line with the tradition of the Tournament, several events are proposed throughout the week. These include the 20th anniversary of Great Tennis Night with a show entitled "Rock the Ballet," danced by Rasta Thomas' Company, "The Bad Boys of Dance." This show combines classical ballet with modern rhythms and features amazing giant video projections with music by Michael JACK
son, Queen, Prince, U 2, the Black Eyed Peas and Lenny Kravitz, not forgetting the voice of Maria Callas.
