A Sign of the Times – Monaco Artists' Collective

4/23/2012  Culture

The exhibition "Groupe Signe 1971-1974, L’Art de la Rue au Musée?" ("Groupe Signe 1971-1974, Street Art at the Museum?") exhibition has just opened at the Villa Paloma (Nouveau Musée National de Monaco).

"Group Signe" ("Sign Group") is an artists' collective.  It was created and led after 1968 by the painters Claude Rosticher and Roland Marghieri and the photographers Michel Cresp and Pierre Lequien, who all originate from Monaco or the surrounding area.

At first, it consisted of a juxtaposition of individual works, but the work of the artists who make up the Signe Group then developed into real collective artistic activities.

Ephemeral street art, in which the public is invited to participate.

Their reflections at that time seem remarkably similar to those of today:
"Buy more, live less" …  and "I consume, therefore I am" …
