Marlborough Gallery Monaco presents “Double Deck”

7/31/2014  Culture

Works by Mike Bouchet and Paul McCarthy will be on display until September 10, 2014

Mike Bouchet and Paul McCarthy have known each other for more than 25 years. Both have made their own observations regarding the Guggenheim Museum.

These similar observations, which began as a joke, led them to produce a large number of works and then a specific project at the Portikus Museum in Frankfurt. The project takes these concerns and places them in a multi-level exhibition structure, involving numerous spaces including outdoor locations. Titled “Powered A-Hole Spanish Donkey Sport Dick Drink Donkey Dong Dongs Sunscreen Model “, this exhibition – which took place from February 14 to April 20, 2014 – presented a range of installations and works whose point of departure was a satirical view of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

The “Double Deck” exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in Monaco is an extension of the Frankfurt exhibition. Its title is a reference, within this new context, to various notions and double deck analogies: the Gallery is situated over two levels and is close to the port.

The conversion of the Gallery to accommodate the exhibition is astounding. The artists have completely taken over and transformed the spaces.

In this exhibition, Mike Bouchet and Paul McCarthy clearly illustrate their view of the art world: they produce works which are critical of art spaces, institutions, themselves, their own role in art, and consequently come up with new creative gestures, underlining the role of artists as court jesters and sharing their thoughts which raise important questions for our time, with a great deal of humor.
