Runners representing Monaco’s Peace & Sport at the ING NYC Marathon will volunteer at Manhattan-based community shelters to help locals affected by Hurricane Sandy

Runners representing Monaco’s Peace & Sport organization who are in New York to compete in this weekend’s ING NYC Marathon will volunteer at Manhattan-based community shelters to help locals affected by Hurricane Sandy. As part of their community outreach, the runners from Europe and the USA, will serve food and distribute supplies to those who have lost power, water and access to their homes. Although the exact number in the P&S contingent is yet to be confirmed, it is believed to be between 15 and 25, many of them business men and women who run marathons as a hobby. This is the second year a team representing Peace & Sport has participated in the world’s most famous annual marathon.

Marie-José Pérec, the French track and field athlete, triple Olympic champion and Peace & Sport Ambassador, had to cancel her appearance this year but is slated to run in 2013. A number of Marathon-related events including a training session in Central Park and a welcome reception on Friday, November 2 co-hosted by the Embassy of the Principality of Monaco, the Consulate General of Monaco and Peace and Sport were cancelled due to the impact of the storm.
