Monaco and UEFA - Football in the Spotlight

7/30/2012  Sport

An important vote for European football and a breathtaking match in Monaco on 30 and 31 August 2012.

The best player in Europe

UEFA's distinction of Best Player in Europe is based on an initiative by its President, Michel Platini, and follows in the tradition of the former title of European Footballer of the Year.  The new trophy was awarded for the first time last August in Monaco, as part of the draw ceremony for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.  Lionel Messi was the first title holder.

As in 2011, the jury was made up of journalists from UEFA's 53 member associations.  Each journalist put forward a list of the five best players (in 2011, it consisted of only three players).  The players are ranked from one to five.  The first player receives five points, the second four points, and so on.

On 14 August, the jury will reveal the names of the three players with the most points at the end of the first round of voting.  The jury will then proceed to a live vote on 30 August in Monaco as part of the draw ceremony for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.  An electronic system will be used to select the winner from the three candidates.

32 players have been nominated (in alphabetical order):  see the web site at www.uefa.com

The Super Cup

The 2012 UEFA Super Cup will take place on Friday 31 August at 8.45 pm in the Stade Louis II in Monaco, between Chelsea FC and the Club Atlético de Madrid.

This promises to be an exciting match between two high-profile teams.

The net capacity of the Stade Louis II is 18,000 spectators.  More than 70% of the tickets are reserved for the general public and supporters of the two participating clubs.
