All the superlatives … from "extraordinary" to "fantastic" … have already been used to describe the superyachts at the annual Monaco Yacht Show. The 22nd show, which will be held from 19 to 22 September 2012, will be no exception to the rule, with a (insert the superlative of your choice!) flotilla of 103 superyachts …
The Monaco Yacht Show is still the most popular superyachting show in the world, because it the only opportunity of the year to admire the latest in design and the industry's best yachts in a single place. 61% of the yachts on show are less than two years old.
The average length of the superyachts in Monaco this year is 46.70 meters (153 ft) (overall length), for a total of 103 boats exhibited. The 2012 show is offering the impressive total of 73 superyachts of over 40 meters (131 ft) and a record total for the over 70-meter (229-ft) category, with six megayachts of an average length of 80.11 m (262 ft). Four of these are new deliveries for 2012: the Nirvana, at 88.5 meters (290 ft), the Hampshire II, at 78.5 meters (257 ft), the Smeralda, at 77 meters (252 ft) and the Mogambo, at 73.51 meters (241 ft).
The largest motor yacht will be on show at the 2012 MYS
The "Nirvana," which was delivered in April 2012, will make her debut on the international scene at the 2012 MYS. This megayacht, which was designed by Sam Sorgiovanni, is impressively spacious, with six decks, a 150-m² (1,614 sq ft) owner's suite, five guest cabins, a crew of 26, a gym and a 3D cinema. More unusual are the two vivariums, with a chameleon, water dragons, turtles and exotic frogs. Her garage contains a whole range of "toys," with two 11-meter (36-ft) tenders, an 8.5-meter (27-ft) waterski boat, six jet skis and diving equipment.
The Most Stylish Design
The "Vertigo" is the largest boat from the New Zealand shipyard Alloy Yachts. It was acclaimed by the whole industry at the 2012 Showboats Awards, winning three prizes (including the interior design prize).
This is the first time that Alloy Yachts has worked in association with French designers Philippe Briand and Christian Liagre (who have worked on the interior design of houses for Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld and Kenzo), and is the culmination of technical success based on 25 years' expertise in yachtbuilding.
The Most "Sporty"
The brief from the owner was simple – to have fun on board. Feadship definitely followed these instructions when designing the "Hampshire II!" The yacht has a heliport at the bow that can be transformed into a football pitch, or a basketball, tennis, baseball or badminton court. There is even a giant net to stop balls being lost overboard!
The largest carbon fibre sloop
The Bugatti blue color and the exterior design might be the most striking features at first sight, but "Better Place" stands out most of all for being the largest carbon fibre sloop ever constructed, and the first sailing boat developed according to the Italian certification company Rina's rigorous "Green Star Class" standards.
Monaco Yacht Show, in association with Rina, will award the 2012 "Green Plus" certificate to the yacht whose construction has adhered most closely to strict ecological standards, drawn up in conformity with international regulations on protecting the environment.
This year, two yachts are being awarded this certification: "Better Place" (see above) and "Aslec 4," with interior design by Remi Téssier, which is part of a new generation of yachts that take today's priorities into account – respecting the environment, economical technical performance and being roomy without necessarily taking up too much space. Of note is the fact that the "Aslec 4" is the second yacht by the Italian shipyard Rossinavi to receive the Green Star certification, following "Numptia" last year.
Not to be Missed
- "La Pellegrina" is being presented at the 2012 MYS as a world première. She is the largest composite yacht ever built in one piece in France. She took 160,000 hours to build and has 500 m2 (5,381 sq ft) of living space and 500 m2 (5,381 sq ft) of decks and terraces.
- "Satori" is returning to the Monaco Yacht Show in 2012 after winning the design prize at the 2011 MYS and best interior design prize (in the "semi-displacement motor yacht" category) at the 2012 Showboats Awards.
- "Diamonds are Forever," was so named by its owner, a James Bond fan. This elegant 61-meter (200-ft) megayacht, launched by Benetti in November 2011, offers a perfect balance of traditional design and innovative contemporary style, reflecting the Italian shipyard's signature style perfectly.
- The "Mogambo," which was brought out by the German shipyard Nobiskrug in October 2011, is a 74-meter (242-ft) aluminum yacht with an impressive amount of space.
