An immense architectural greenhouse
The Centre Botanique is a contemporary extension of Monaco's Jardin Exotique. Created in the 1960s, the greenhouses were given a facelift in 2017. Designed by architects Fabrice Notari and Rudy Ricciotti, the new building was inaugurated by HSH Prince Albert II and Mayor Georges Marsan. It combines architectural elegance and functionality, with 900 m² of greenhouses and 1,000 m² of shelters spread over three levels. It houses more than 10,500 plants, 85% of which are protected, making it a conservatory of plant biodiversity. Seven specialised gardeners work full time to preserve this collection.
A remarkable botanical collection
The Centre Botanique de Monaco is renowned for its collection of cacti and succulents, one of the largest in the world. These plants, native to the arid regions of America, Africa and Asia, are presented in optimal conditions. From bromeliads and aloes to globular cacti, yuccas and agaves, visitors can discover the morphology of cacti, learn about their adaptation to extreme environments andadmire their flowering. Some of the Centre's rare species are on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) red list .
A place for conservation and research
In addition to its aesthetic vocation, the Centre Botanique de Monaco plays an important role in the conservation of endangered plant species. It participates in research and conservation programmes in collaboration with international scientific institutions. This mission is part of the Principality's commitment to protecting the environment and biodiversity.
An immersive and educational visit
The Botanic Centre is open to the public free of charge, making it part of a varied tour of Monaco. Visitors are free to wander through the greenhouses, where explanatory panels explain the different species. They can also opt for a guided tour (free of charge and by prior arrangement, every Saturday at 10am and 2pm) to learn even more about succulent plants and their ecosystem.
Relaxing between greenery and the sea
Beyond its impressive collection of plants, the garden promises a soothing Monegasque experience. The light gently streaming through the glass roof, the beautifully shaped plants and the ambient calm create a special atmosphere. It's an ideal place to reconnect with nature and escape the urban hustle and bustle, while enjoying breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.
Learning about cacti
The Centre Botanique is not just a haven of peace where nature lovers come to recharge their batteries in Monaco: it's also a place for teaching. Throughout the year, educational workshops and special events are organised to raise awareness among young and old of the importance of preserving biodiversity. From school visits to specialist conferences and family events, the garden team works to make botany accessible to all.
