The Ballets de Monte-Carlo Dance "Choré"

Jean-Christophe Maillot's new work will be presented at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco from 25 to 28 April 2013

With "Choré," Jean-Christophe Maillot steps aside from the world of the great narrative ballets for a moment to devote himself to these short, abstract works, which are still characteristic of his work and approach.

"Choré" is composed of five independent sections.  It is set against a background of the emergence of musicals in the United States.

This period, which the choreographer presents as less sparkling than we might imagine, is a pretext for asking questions about the evolution of dance.  It is an attempt to escape from the conflict between ancient and modern, which is an obsession for this choreographer.

What does dance feed on?  How far can it be liberated?  At what point does it claim its share of beauty, humour and the past, in order to still feel alive?   The world of musicals offers some valuable insights to these questions and Jean-Christophe Maillot makes use of numerous aspects to develop his own work.
