Monte-Carlo Opera – The Season begins on 24 October 2013

Placido Domingo is conducting two operas by Gian Carlo Menotti: Amelia Al Ballo & The Telephone

"The Telephone" & "Amélia Al Ballo" are two humorous gems.

"Amelia al Ballo," Gian Carlo Menotti's first success, is a reflection of a carefree era.  The work relates the anxiety felt by an Italian socialite who is obsessed by the success of her appearance at the season's grand ball.

In this work, Menotti makes remarkable use of melody, and subtle though caustic humour.

When he composed "The Telephone or L’Amour à trois," the world had just been ravaged by a world war and society had undoubtedly changed.  This time, although basically humorous, the work expresses a very modern preoccupation – the emergence of new technology and its effect on romantic relationships.  It's clear that, more than sixty years after the "The Telephone" was first created, we still haven't found a solution to this problem …

A special event:  This is the first time that Plácido Domingo has conducted at the Monte-Carlo Opera.  It will be an opportunity for him to present two works that he loves and wishes to promote at the greatest concert halls.
