A museum, collections and collectors
Located near the Jardin Animalier, the Musée des Timbres et des Monnaies is one of the world's leading museums for numismatics (the study and collection of coins and medals) and philately.
Initially showcasing the personal collections of Prince Rainier III, the museum has gradually opened up to other sources to make up its vast inventory. Here you will find not only rare or rarely exhibited stamps and coins, but also nineteenth-century finds, old casino tokens, original medals and stamp and coin-making tools.
World philatelic exhibitions in Monaco
With a long tradition of issuing stamps - the Principality of Monaco has been minting its own currency since 1640 and the local post office has been printing since 1885 - the Principality has acquired a great reputation among collectors. This aura is reflected in the Stamp and Coin Museum, where philatelists and numismatists from all over the world come to enjoy a temporary exhibition dedicated to coins every three or four years, and international philatelic exhibitions on a regular basis.
A museum... and a shop for collectors
The Musée des Timbres et des Monnaies also frequently works in partnership with the Office du Timbre to promote the issue of new blocks or special editions. The museum shop also serves as a sales outlet for decorating envelopes, adding coins to collections and reading books on postal and monetary services.
