Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology

A prehistory museum at the heart of Monaco's heritage

Located in the heart of Monaco's Jardin Exotique, the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology is just a few metres from the Grotte de l'Observatoire, a site occupied by man since prehistoric times. Many of the items on display at the museum come from this local area, from the Grottes Saint-Martin (close to Monaco's Oceanographic Museum) and from the Grotte du Prince, located in the hamlet of Grimaldi, in Ventimiglia.

Treasures from the past

The Albert I room showcases the main objects and specimens from the museum's permanent collection. A mammoth skeleton from Siberia is the highlight of the show, but there are many other fascinating items to help us better understand the early days of humankind. Prehistoric tools, burial remains, fossils and various finds by palaeontologists make up a rich assortment of treasures from the past.

The Rainier III Room at Monaco's Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology is regularly transformed for a variety of temporary exhibitions. The programme is varied: photo exhibitions, retrospectives on iconic prehistoric objects and loans from other anthropological institutions are all part of the museum's current programme. In 2024, for example, the Lascaux exhibition in Monaco in VR allowed visitors to discover the incredible prehistoric heritage of the cave with the world's most famous cave paintings.

Modern entertainment

Escape games, holiday workshops, themed birthday parties and games are organised on site for the museum's youngest visitors. A fun way to immerse yourself in the mysterious and fascinating world of Prehistory in Monaco!
