A museum, collections, collectors
Situated near the Jardin Animalier, the Museum of Stamps and Coins ranks amongst the world’s leading centres for numismatics (the study and collection of coins and medals) and philately.
Originally showcasing Rainier III’s personal collections, the museum has gradually expanded to include other sources, building up its extensive collection. It houses not only extremely rare or seldom-exhibited stamps and coins, but also 19th-century finds, original medals and tools used in the manufacture of stamps and coins.
World philatelic exhibitions in Monaco
With a long tradition of coin and stamp issuance – the first Monegasque coins were minted in January 1640 by Prince Honoré II, whilst the first stamps were printed in 1885 by Prince Charles III – the Principality has earned a fine reputation amongst collectors. This reputation is reflected in the Museum of Stamps and Coins , where philatelists and numismatists from all over the world come to enjoy, every three or four years, a temporary exhibition dedicated to coins, and every two years to attend the MonacoPhil international philatelic exhibition.
A museum and a shop for collectors… but that’s not all
To extend your visit or simply take home a special souvenir of the Principality, the museum shop offers philatelic items published by the Office des émissions de Timbres-Poste (regular and collector’s stamps, blocks and inserts, first-day covers…), as well as specialist books, commemorative medals from the Monnaie de Paris and many other items.
A new experience for young explorers
Discover Monaco’s heritage by observing, understanding and, above all, having fun!
Since 30 September 2026, the Museum of Stamps and Coins has been offering a new experience specially designed for young visitors. Armed with a fun and educational puzzle booklet, children aged 8–15 can explore the collections independently, whilst those aged 6 and over must be accompanied by an adult.
Observation games, missions and interesting facts punctuate the tour: children observe, search and take on challenges whilst discovering the history of stamps and coins, the secrets of how they are made, and Monegasque heritage. A surprise awaits them at the end of the adventure!
Good to know: until 2 November 2026 inclusive, when you buy a children’s activity book for €5, you’ll receive one free adult admission.
