Princess Grace Rose Garden
Roseraie Princease Grace: a legacy of roses
27 years after creating the Bal de la Rose, Princess Grace of Monaco chaired the jury of the first International Rose Show, organised in the Principality in 1981. That year, the Princess of Monaco variety was created as a tribute to the emotional bond that united the actress-turned-sovereign to this flower. Two years after her tragic death, Prince Rainier III inaugurated the Princess Grace Rose Garden as a tribute to his late wife. Fifty donors contributed to the planting of a wide variety of beds: for forty years, this diversity of origin has been the main attraction of the rose garden, now a symbol ofinternational botanical excellence.
The Princesse Grace: a journey through roses
Since its recent renovation, more than 450 varieties of rose have been displayed in the alleys of the Roseraie Princesse Grace, covering an area of almost 5,000 m². Several thousand roses are arranged in concentric circles around the central fountain: perfume roses inside, shrubby landscape roses outside on the shopping centre side, collection roses (i.e. the most famous varieties in the history of rose selections and cross-breeding) on the heliport side, and the roses honoured by the International Competition of New Roses of Monaco on the Avenue des Guelfes, finally, the roses of the Grimaldi family and personalities - in Monaco, you can discover varieties named Léo Ferré, Simone Weil or Nicolas Hulot - are spread out in the western part of the garden next to a 50-metre long water wall, the only mineral décor in this plant paradise.
Shimmering colour or variegated pattern, exotic fragrance or Mediterranean scent: each rose in this magnificent garden exalts a different flavour and chromatic nuance. It's a place that inspires painters, who come to immortalise each grove in special workshops, as well as lovers of 'green' tourism : a stroll through the Princess Grace Rose Garden is sure to inspire serenity!
A competitionand an ecological approach
With Ecocert certification, the Roseraie Princesse Grace has made sustainable development and the use of natural solutions one of its trademarks. In concrete terms, in addition to theabsence of chemical inputs for its rose production, the site is home to a number of hens that clear the flowerbeds of weeds while helping to fertilise the soil.
The site promotes the ecological cultivation of roses through a wide range of events and visits . In addition to students from horticultural schools across Europe who come here for study visits, anyone with an interest in roses can flock to the Roseraie on Heritage Days, when more detailed information is provided by gardeners and specialists from Monaco's Department of Urban Development. This body, which is responsible for this area, regularly organises events in conjunction with Monegasque associations, such as rose-cutting workshops.
Every two years, the Princess Grace Rose Garden is also the venue for the International Competition of New Roses of Monaco. Nearly 76 varieties, for example, were submitted to the juries and the public in 2024, the date of the site's 40ᵉ anniversary, with various prizes awarded and an awards ceremony attended by Princess Caroline of Hanover, representative of the Princess Grace Foundation, which organises charity rose sales at each competition.
