"Maillot's Songe is funny, fantastical and full of inventiveness." - RESMUSICA (2018)

From Sunday 2 to Tuesday 4 May 2021, at 2 pm Grimaldi Forum Monaco - Salle des Princes

Le Songe is Jean-Christophe Maillot's "data bank". It contains all of the ideas he has developed over the course of his career. In his previous narrative ballets, Jean-Christophe Maillot has often used binary opposition and head-on clashes to pit one truth against another. Le Songe, however, is different. Here, Jean-Christophe Maillot has not two but three worlds: the Athenians', the Fairies', and the Artisans'. This triplicate approach is less black and white, and more shades of grey. Truths shine a little less brightly.

The three worlds of Le Songe represent the three stages in the maturity of the dancer. Take the world of the young Athenians: dynamic, fast, intense. It demands a "physicality" that is often the preserve of youth. The second world, that of the Fairies, requires more experienced performers. The narration makes way for a somewhat disconcertingly abstract formula. In this universe, eroticism sows confusion. The third world is that of the Artisans. It is the realm of a handful of veteran dancers, expressing the blind love that artists feel for their work. The good, the bad, the ridiculous, or the fear of failure no longer have any hold over them, leaving them to their incomprehensible, unpredictable universe.... and completely free.
