Summer Dances at the Ballets de Monte-Carlo from 16 to 27 July 2014

With "Summer Dances" (L’Eté Danse) at the Monte-Carlo Opera's Salle Garnier, the Ballets de Monte-Carlo will be offering audiences a high-level summer programme.

As usual, Jean-Christophe Maillot has ensured that his summer programme is very diverse;  also, the choreographer of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo wished to offer emotionally charged dances with a powerful aesthetic, in an exceptional setting.   From 16 to 19 July, on the same evening, the dancers will perform three works that are both virtuoso and demanding.

With "New Sleep" by William Forsythe, they will breathe new life into choreography that was considered a breathtaking example of Forsythe's work in the 1980s.

Marco Goecke is offering "Sigh," a work created especially for the Company's dancers.

Finally, the Company will perform "Little Death" ("Petite Mort") by Jirí Kylián, a masterpiece that has become part of the history of dance and has helped to make this Czech artist famous.

From 24 to 27 July, the Compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo will be performing "Choré" by Jean-Christophe Maillot once again.  This work was enthusiastically received when it was first performed in 2013.  It explores the contrasting world of American musicals and offers a moving reflection on the role that dance can play in a world that is becoming less and less rational.

By transposing this ballet from the large stage of the Grimaldi Forum to the more intimate setting of the Monte-Carlo Opera, Jean-Christophe Maillot is offering the audience a new reading of this rhythmic, inventive work.

The Ballets de Monte-Carlo – Programme from 16 to 19 July 2014

The Ballets de Monte-Carlo present "Summer Dances!" ("l’été Danse !") at the Salle Garnier – a summer programme characterised by aesthetic dances that are full of emotion.

From 16 to 19 July 2014, audiences can enjoy an evening of three works.

The evening will open with "New Sleep," a major work by William Forsythe, which pushes classical dance in a symmetrical, orthogonal direction.  The choreography of this work stands out for being both rigorous and sensual.

This will be followed by Marco Goecke's work "Sigh."  The Company's dancers express the meaning of this work through visibility, mystery and rapid movements, with a particular focus on the use of the décor.

The evening will close with "Petite Mort" ("Little Death") by Jiri Kylian.  This work is regarded as a masterpiece in the history of dance because of its very strong symbolism, in which aggression, sexuality, energy, silence and cultivated absurdity are intermingled.
