A silent film in two parts made in 1924 by Fritz LANG and his wife Thea von Harbou, Die Nibelungen is considered a masterpiece of German cinema. The film tells the story of a 13th century German poem and is inspired by Wagner's opera cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen.
The first part, entitled "The Death of Siegfried", sees Siegfried, son of King Siegmund, complete his apprenticeship with the dwarf Mime where he forges a magnificent sword. He then travels to Worms, capital of Burgundy, to seek the hand of Kriemhild, sister of King Gunther. While passing through a forest, he slays a dragon and bathes in its blood, becoming invulnerable, except for a spot on his shoulder that was covered by a falling leaf. On arriving in Worms, Siegfried asks for the hand Kriemhild. King Gunther agrees, but only on condition that he travels to Iceland to bring back the wild Queen Brunhild, whose hand he seeks.
The second part is entitled "Kriemhild's Revenge". After the death of Siegfried, his wife Kriemhild marries Etzel, King of the Huns. She invites her brother Gunther and Siegfried's murderer, Hagen…
