"Romeo and Juliet" in Monaco for the Monegasque National Day

Gounod's adaptation of Shakespeare's play will be performed at the Grimaldi Forum from 16 to 22 November 2014

Created in 1867, "Romeo and Juliet" ("Roméo et Juliette") was Gounod's first undisputed theatrical success and the high point of his career.

His later productions did not enjoy such immediate success.  Although his three major operas ("Faust," "Mireille" and "Roméo et Juliette") have since been performed on some of the most renowned stages, it must be remembered that they were composed for the Théâtre Lyrique, a creative, although lesser known, Parisian theatre.

"Romeo and Juliet" is unique in the history of opera, as it includes no less than four love duets.  This special emotional bond between the two protagonists, cleverly woven by faithful librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, make Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet" the best adaptation of Shakespeare's play;  in any case, it is the most vibrant and the most likely to reach out to a modern audience.
