"Diva on Detour", recital by Patricia Racette, soprano with Craig Terry, piano, organised by the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. On the programme: songs by Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, George Gershwin and Edith PiafThursday 27 February 2020, at 8 pm Opéra de Monte-Carlo - Salle Garnier

In the post-war period, Rudolf Bing, the legendarily strict general manager of the New York Metropolitan Opera, learned that his leading Wagnerian soprano, Helen Traubel, was performing in cabaret in her free time. Stunned by the discovery, he spectacularly banned her from his theatre. Fortunately, attitudes have evolved in the fifty years since, and crossover has become the sign of a rare talent capable of embracing every facet of music.

Now, America's Patricia Racette is set to bring the iconic Broadway of the mid-20th century to the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, with her recital Diva On Detour, performing songs by Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and even Édith Piaf. Though she may be known for her triumphant roles in Madame Butterfly, Tosca and Peter Grimes, make no mistake: Patricia Racette is equally at home in this repertoire of light-hearted and melancholy music, thanks to her versatile voice, sense of rhythm and dramatic intuition. For one night, two worlds will collide, completing the Street Scene depictions in which Patricia Racette will play the magnificent role of Anna Maurrant.
