Initially rejected by the State authorities before its world première in 1874, Boris Godunov remains Russia's most legendary opera.Thursday 22 (gala), Tuesday 27, Thursday 29 April and Sunday 2 May 2021, at 2 pm Opéra de Monte-Carlo - Salle Garnier

Modest Mussorgsky, a civil servant plagued by alcoholism and a pioneering, mercurial composer, perhaps lacked the strength needed to defend his creation, completed in 1869. The advisory committee of the Imperial Theatres imposed a raft of changes that would effectively transform his original vision. What was first written as a portrait of a man with an all-consuming ambition, facing off against "his" people before being racked by his sins until his death, became a vast tableau of 16th century Russian society and its political upheavals. Thanks to the work of Pavel Lamm (1928), we now know what Mussorgsky intended his piece to look like, and that it is much closer to Pushkin's text than the revised version. The Opéra de Monte-Carlo has chosen to perform this more psychologically potent version for the first time. In this intimate setting, the life and torments of Tsar Boris will take on stark relief and unique dramatic power.
