"Monacopolis" – The New National Museum of Monaco's New Exhibition

Architecture, town planning and urbanisation in Monaco. Achievements and projects from 1858 to 2012

Since 1858, when a bathing establishment was opened in La Condamine, followed by the construction of a Casino in the area known as Les Spélugues and the creation of the Monte-Carlo district, Monaco has been the subject of continuous urbanisation.

The New National Museum of Monaco wished to look back at the highlights.

More than two years of research and collecting was necessary to create "Monacopolis."  Photos, archives and town planning schemes will be presented in three exhibition areas.

The most historic part will be exhibited at the Villa Sauber, showing the creation of the Monte-Carlo district and its iconic buildings.

The Villa Paloma will present the main stages of urbanisation from the mid 1940s onwards, by means of various projects by some of the great names in architecture.

Opening of Monacopolis, the NMNM's New Exhibition

After two years of research, the Villa Paloma and the Villa Sauber are presenting an exhibition of architecture, town planning and urbanisation in Monaco, 1858 to 2012

It took the New National Museum of Monaco (NMNM) two years to study, catalogue and gather together the documents on architecture and town planning in the Principality.

The result is revealed in the exhibition "Monacopolis - Architecture, Town Planning and Urbanisation in Monaco, Achievements and Projects, 1858 – 2012," which is based on three main themes:  buildings that were never constructed, buildings that have been demolished, and present-day buildings.

Images of today's urbanisation were taken using aerial photography.

The Villa Sauber is presenting a tour of the Monte-Carlo district (more than 600 historic maps and numerous models are on show).  The Villa Paloma is exhibiting projects that were never carried out and proposed solutions that are imaginative and spontaneous.  Of note are a rather mysterious little sketch by Le Corbusier and proposals for urban expansion by the London-based group Archigram.

Finally, the "Off Circuit" programme is an opportunity to see this exhibition in a different way each time, from 19th January and on a regular basis, thanks to the architects, artists, musicians, writers and historians who have been invited by the NMNM, and will make everyone's memories of the city even more vivid.

150 additional works have been added to the MONACOPOLIS exhibition to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Société des Bains de Mer, bringing Monte-Carlo back to life through costumes, accessories and models of decors.

The architecture of the Casino, the Café de Paris, the Hôtel de Paris and the Palais des Beaux-Arts are the ideal backdrop for these special collections.

The Villa Sauber is closed from 3 to 16 June to hang the new works.
