4th Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series

Guests of honour for the first time in Monaco, the GC32 hydrofoil catamarans will be the stars of the show

For the whole of the winter season, the Bay of Monaco will come to life with the presence of 300 sailors from 12 different nationalities, who are taking part in the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, a series of competitions organised by the Yacht Club of Monaco in association with equipment manufacturer SLAM.  After the first phase last October, showcasing the Melges 20, it's now time for two new classes to compete this weekend – the J/70s, and for the first time, the GC32s.

The Principality will "foil" for the GC32s

On the initiative of Pierre Casiraghi, four GC32s, new-generation hydrofoil catamarans, including Malizia, will compete for the first time in the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series, alternating fleet racing and match racing on the same route as that of the Americas Cup.  The Monegasque team, led by Pierre Casiraghi, is comprised of Sébastien Col, Boris Herrmann, Richard Mason and Adam Piggott.  They will confront Team Engie, Realteam and the Armin Strom Sailing Team.

The Melges 20 have already kicked off the races

The Yacht Club of Monaco began the Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series with the Melges 20 fleet, for the first phase of the 2016/2017 season.  A regatta was held in early October and won by the Russian Alexandr Ezhkov (Pirogovo Sailing), who will be back this weekend to defend his place as leader of the overall ranking.  The best sailors in the series will therefore be on deck.  Valentin Zavadnikov, of the Y.C.M., who initiated these competitions, will also be taking part on board Synergy.

J70s out in force

With more than thirty already registered, the J/70s are already well established.  This fleet, which is very active in the Principality, now consists of 17 boats, which sail under the Monegasque flag.  Nine of them will be taking part, from Friday, in their first event of the season, alongside numerous teams from Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey and Brazil.  The date is set and a spectacular show is guaranteed!
