The Musical "L'Homme de la Mancha" ("The Man of La Mancha") at Monaco Opera

Don Quixote and Sancho Panza will be on stage at the Opéra Garnier from 20 to 23 December 2012

Written with no interruption and with a unique stage set, "L’Homme de la Mancha" ("The Man of La Mancha") retraces the epic story of an impossible quest, through a parallel between the life of Cervantes and his Knight of the Rueful Countenance, transposed into the world of musicals.

The work was created in Connecticut;  during one of the musical's many Broadway performances, Jacques Brel became fascinated by the idealistic, moving character of Don Quixote.  He decided to create a French adaption of the work and wrote the words and music himself.

The first performance in French was on 4 October 1968 at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, with Jacques Brel in the title role and Dario Moreno in the role of Sancho Panza.

At the end of 2010, Jean-Louis Grinda presented a new production of the work at the Théâtre du Capitole, which was a co-production with the Monte-Carlo Opera.

The performances at the Monte-Carlo Opera in December are an event in more ways than one – it's the first American musical to be performed at this theatre and the first time that soprano Nicola Beller Carbone (one of the greatest "Salomes" of our time) has ventured into a repertoire that blends theatre and song.
