3rd Weekend of the 2014 Monte-Carlo Spring Arts Festival ("Printemps des Arts")

The focus is on Japan at the 3rd weekend of the 30th Monte-Carlo Spring Arts Festival.

No culture combines tradition and modernity better than Japanese culture.  The great traditions of the imperial courts, music for intellectual salons and butoh dance coexist alongside avant-garde electro music and the most radical contemporary music … and other forms of art that echo the music.

This special Japanese weekend begins on Friday 28 March at 8.30 p.m. in the Auditorium with the National Orchestra of Lyon.  The Orchestra will play works by Takemitsu and Debussy.

On Saturday 29 March at 8 p.m. in the Salle Garnier, the Buddhist Temple of the Silver Pavilion in Kyoto is offering an Ikebana session, accompanied by music by Toshio Hosokawa and some traditional Japanese music.  There will also be a performance by butoh dancers.

On 30 March, the Salle Empire will host a concert of traditional Japanese music, which will start at 11 a.m.  From 1.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. there will be demonstrations of the Incense and Tea Ceremonies by the Buddhist Temple of the Silver Pavilion in Kyoto, followed by a concert commissioned by the Monte-Carlo Spring Arts Festival.

The programme for the weekend also features talented young performers and cello master classes.
