In 1943, after thirty years of teaching, Uchida announces to his pupils that he is going to retire and devote himself to his career as a writer ….
With "Madadayo," "The Emperor," as he is nicknamed in Japan, presents a more personal work, while remaining within the realm of memory and suffering.
