As part of Russian Year in Monaco, Monte-Carlo Opera is presenting "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" from 24 to 28 April 2015

In the autumn of 1930, the young Dmitri Shostakovich set to work composing a new opera, a dark portrayal of the province and of prison conditions in Russia.  Above all, the opera is an unvarnished portrait of the amorous desires of its heroine.

"Lady Macbeth de Mtsensk" was first performed on 22 January 1934 in Leningrad, and then two days later in Moscow, under the title of "Katerina Ismaïlova."  The opera is a blend of the grotesque and the tragic;  it stands out as one of the great musical scores of the 20th century and is a work that leaves a lasting impression.

Almost 80 years later, "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" has lost none of its raw power.
