The Monaco Project for the Arts Association Presents "Femme au divan II" ("Woman on the Sofa II")

This exhibition by New York artist Mickalene Thomas at the Pavillon Bosio will be on show until 31 August 2014

The Monaco Project for the Arts and Monaco Art School, Pavillon Bosio, are hosting the now traditional summer exhibition at the Art School.

This year, American artist Mickalene Thomas is presenting her exhibition "Femme au divan II," in various media, including paintings, photographs and video.

Inspired by a variety of influences, from the great painters of the 19th century (such as Ingres, Courbet and Manet) to more contemporary artists (Picasso, Matisse, Bearden, Lawrence, and more recently David Hockney), Mickalene Thomas is committed to reimagining the depiction of black women in art.

With a graphic style blending a wide range of elements (including floral motifs, retro clothing, furniture made from leather, wicker and bamboo, African dyed fabrics, embroidered rugs, etc.), canvases with glittering rhinestones and enamel paint that sparkles in the light, the artist depicts her models with realism and a touch of magic.

Works by Mickalene Thomas already form part of prestigious private and public collections such as the MOMA, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Brooklyn Museum.  Mickalene Thomas is considered one of the most renowned artists on the contemporary scene in the United States and recently had some major solo shows in the United Sates and in Europe.
