On Sunday 22 September, the OPMC is performing Beethoven's 9th Symphony
Beethoven's 9th Symphony was first performed on 7 May 1824 in Vienna, conducted by the composer himself.
Because Beethoven was almost totally deaf by this time, he was assisted by Schuppanzigh and Umlauf, who showed him the movements at the beginning of each piece.
It was an overwhelming success. The audience even interrupted the artists by applauding during the performance.
Beethoven thanked everyone by simply bowing. This was the signal for an unprecedented outburst of appreciation, which continued for some time, with cheers of gratitude from the audience for the immense pleasure they had just experienced.
Beethoven would die three years later, on 26 May 1827, on a snowy day, during a thunderstorm.
For the first time, voices were included in the final part of the 9th Symphony, in a musical setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy."
In this Symphony, Beethoven finally realised his lifetime's project, celebrating Joy, the Joy that overcomes pain, the Joy that liberates, divine Joy.
As a prelude to the concert, there will be an "Introduction to the Work" at 5 p.m. by André Peyrègne, Director of the Regional Conservatory of Nice – Free entry –
