William Tell at Monaco Opera
Monte-Carlo Opera is performing Rossini's opera from 22 to 28 January 2015
Rossini was 37 when he wrote "William Tell." This would be his last opera; afterwards, he retired to a tranquil life in Paris.
He left the world of opera a monument to the new Romantic style, with its fluid forms. His famous overture to this opera – a veritable symphonic poem in four movements – reflected this new style and opened the way for other composers.
Twenty years before the Spring of Nations, William Tell was already a celebration of the Europe of nations, the fight for freedom and a love of Nature.
