Saturday 23 March 2024 saw the glitziest event of Monaco’s year,
the highly anticipated Rose Ball, held under the presidency of H.R.H. the
Princess of Hanover.
More than a celebration of glamour and high society, this annual event raises
funds in aid of the Princess Grace Foundation.
For this 58th Rose Ball, the illustrious designer Christian Louboutin,
famed for his iconic red-soled shoes, was once again tasked with choosing the
evening’s theme and sumptuous decor, for the third successive year. In the
legendary Salle des Etoiles at the Sporting Monte-Carlo, guests were transported back to the 1970s by the “Disco” theme with its
retro vibe, spangles and glitterballs galore.
As is customary, the Rose Ball brought together a veritable who’s who of international personalities
for a lavish party and banquet. Entertainment was provided by a host of famous
artists, and included an opening number by the drag queens Shangela and Chad
Michaels, and a performance by 48 dancers led by choreographer Sadeck Berrabah.
The highlight of the evening saw disco legend Gloria Gaynor light up the room
with classic hits like “I Will Survive” and "I Am What I Am".
The Rose Ball is not just about the glitz and glamour for which Monaco
is famous, but is also a chance to bring people together in a good cause. The
star-studded event is the perfect illustration of the Principality’s commitment
to solidarity and altruism. The evening included a charity tombola featuring
some exceptional prizes, with all of the proceeds going to the Princess Grace
Foundation. The Foundation supports those in difficulty and disadvantaged
children, through a range of humanitarian actions and philanthropy.
This 58th Rose Ball was a special one, as it marked the 70th anniversary
of the event created in 1954 by Société des Bains to kick off the festivities
in Monaco. In 1964, on the wishes of Princess Grace of Monaco and following the
creation of the Foundation that bears her name, the Rose Ball became a charity
event.
A sparkling spectacle in a magical setting, the Rose Ball features a different
theme every year, represented by eclectic artists and new ideas. Big names are
entrusted with the artistic reins of the evening, including Karl Lagerfeld or
more recently Christian Louboutin, choosing the theme (Havana, the Vienna
Secession, Manhattan, the Roaring Twenties), floral decorations, and the menu,
always with the final approval of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, creating a
truly unique, almost surreal occasion.
