Rusalka at the Monte-Carlo Opera

Antonin Dvorak's lyrical fairy tale will be performed at the Opéra Garnier from 24 to 31 January 2014

Rusalka, Antonin Dvorak's most famous opera, has been a success since its first performance in March 1901.

Blending magic, national folklore and mythology, the work offered the audience of the Prague National Theatre a poetic reflection on his nationalistic aspirations.

Although some of the tunes are inspired by ancient folk melodies, and harmonies typical of Czech music appear here and there, Rusalka is an original, lyrical and colourful work, with rich orchestration.

Dvorak's score is full of magic and sensuality and is perfectly suited to the characters and dramatic storyline.

Jaroslav Kvapil's libretto was largely inspired by Andersen's Little Mermaid.   It features Rusalka, a water nymph, who wants to become human, because she is in love with a handsome prince.  This impossible wish leads to a dénouement that is both dramatic and moving.
