Evening Shows and Open-air Screenings

From 6 pm to 9 pm: Free admission to the exhibition "Variations, Eugène Frey's Light Set Projections", presented by João Maria Gusmão.
9 pm: Screening starts: free admission subject to available places, advance booking required ([email protected]). In case of bad weather, the screening will be cancelled.

Originally programmed in collaboration with the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco under the "film d'artiste" label created by "Tout l'art du cinéma" ("The Art of the Cinema"). 

Sunstone, by Filipa César and Louis Henderson, is a portrait of Roque Pina, keeper of the Cabo da Roca lighthouse at the extreme western tip of continental Europe. In voiceover, he talks about his work and his complex background, as a son of a father from Cabo Verde who fought alongside the Portuguese. He passionately defends the need for a lighthouse philosophy. 
César and Henderson answer that call. Through its  portrait of Pina and beyond, Sunstone explores the optical metaphors for the rationality of Light via two lens-based technologies, the lighthouse and the camera, at a time when they are gradually being replaced by GPS algorithms and synthetic images respectively. The lighthouse is becoming a symbol of an ambivalent heritage of discovery and orientation, two concepts that also happen to be both epistomological and territorial. Read more
