Lucia di Lammermoor is a masterpiece that marked the birth of Italian romantic music. This opera in three acts was written in 1835 by composer Gaetano Donizetti and librettist Salvatore Cammarano.

In the mists of 16th century Scotland, Lucia and Edgardo are in love, despite the enmity between their families, the Ashtons and the Ravenswoods. The lovers swear fidelity to one another. Edgardo must leave for France. Taking advantage of his absence, Enrico Ashton persuades his sister Lucia that Edgardo is cheating on her. The young woman breaks down and agrees to wed Arturo Bucklaw. Edgardo returns. Believing that Lucia has betrayed him by agreeing to the marriage, he publicly curses her. Lucia marries Arturo, but is seized by a fit of madness and stabs her husband.
