"L'Elisir d'Amore" by Gaetano Donizetti at the Monte-Carlo Opera

Nathalie Stutzmann will be conducting this romantic bel canto masterpiece on 21, 23, 26 and 28 February in Monaco

When "L'Elisir d'Amore" was first performed at the Teatro della Canobbiana on 12 May 1832, it was enthusiastically received.

A year after the success of "Bolena," Milan was completely won over.

The protagonists in "L'Elisir" differ from those in more serious works, not so much because of the nature of their feelings, but because the specificity of this romantic comedy lies in the versatility of the state of mind of the characters and their ability to laugh through their tears instead of wallowing in tragedy.

Nemorino, more than any other character, exploits this sentimental aspect.  The lyrical writing for this character is best expressed in the famous romantic aria "Una furtiva lagrima."

The tenor Caruso was very fond of this fine melody;  this led to the work being premièred at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in 1904.  Caruso made it his signature tune, and it enabled him to make a triumphant breakthrough onto the world's leading stages.

This will be Nathalie Stutzmann's début in the pit of the Monte-Carlo Opera.  She will also be conducting a romantic bel canto masterpiece for the first time in her career.
