"Il Mondo Della Luna" at the Opéra Garnier, Monte-Carlo

This operatic drama by Joseph Haydn will be performed on 21, 23 and 25 March 2014

"Il Mondo della Luna" was composed in 1777 for the wedding of Count Esterhazy, son of Prince Nicolas.  The libretto was inspired by a play by Goldoni.

Ecclitico, a self-proclaimed astronomer, makes the old Buonafede believe that, on the moon, young girls love old men, men reign over women, and travelling from the Earth to the moon erases the ravages of time and brings peace between the sexes.

In reality, he is after his money and his daughters.  In this dramma giocoso, emotions give way to self-interest and calculation.

It’s a fable about men's gullibility and the way in which they are always ready to believe in miracles.

For this cynical, racy libretto, Haydn composed music that is inventive and refined, as mischievous as the mind of Ecclitico!

The show by Emilio Sagi has just been awarded the Campoamor Prize for the best operatic stage setting of the year.  In an "Almodovar-style" world, Goldoni's characters are depicted with both irony and tenderness.
