"Ernani" at the Monte-Carlo Opera

Several performances of Verdi's opera are scheduled from 22 to 29 April 2014

With "Ernani," a lively adaption of Hugo's drama that expresses the full beauty of opera, Verdi and his librettist Piave retained the verbal eloquence of the dramaturgy while conserving its spirit and meaning in the music.

"Ernani" was created in 1844 in Venice, between "Nabucco" and "Macbeth."  It represents a milestone in the composer's work, a point of departure towards the psychological development of his characters.  His subsequent work never strayed from this quest for reality.

The title role is an outcast, a type of character that was dear to Verdi and which he depicted constantly throughout his career - for example Carlo in "I Masnadieri," Manrico in "Il Trovatore," and Alvaro in "La Forza del Destino."

The magnificent tableau in Act III represents the scope of the great opera with a chorus.  Above all, it is the Act in which the composer defines and gives rise to what would become a vocal archetype – the Verdi Baritone.
