"At the end of the 17th century, the magic lantern took several more or less divergent paths. Scientists used it for education, the nobility for recreation. Opticians and peddlers earned a daily crust from it. A few charlatans used it to frighten the gullible. Finally, it very quickly became popular as a theatrical device, the purpose which will be explored in this talk". Excerpt from the text by Laurent Mannoni to appear in the exhibition catalogue
