Sport holds an important place in Monaco. In addition to the world-famous Monaco Grand Prix and the Rolex Tennis Masters, since the 1950s the Principality has also become known for its football team, which has enjoyed both domestic and European success. With eight French league titles, five victories in the Coupe de France, one Coupe de la Ligue, and in Europe, appearances in the Finals of both the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Champions League, AS Monaco is among the most prestigious clubs in French football.

The Stade Louis II has played host to some titanic matches in competitions from France's Ligue 1 to the illustrious Champions League itself, against the likes of Paris St Germain, Olympique de Marseille, Manchester United, and Real Madrid.
