A restored version of Jacques Demy's film will be screened at the Grimaldi Forum Monaco on 20 March 2013 at 8 pm
Ciné Tamaris and La Cinémathèque Française have just restored "La Baie des Anges," Jacques Demy's 1962 masterpiece, thanks to the support of the Franco-American Cultural Fund, Monaco Audiovisual Archives and SOGEDA Monaco.
The film tells the story of Jean Fournier (Claude Mann), a humble bank clerk in Paris, who is introduced to gambling by his friend Caron. Caron takes him to the casino in Enghien, where Jean wins a large sum of money – the start of a passion that leads him into a world he knows only from books and the cinema.
Jacques Demy does not aim to portray an image of a substantial, fluid world. He prefers the uncertain world of gaming to the stability of what is real – a world inhabited by the ravishing Jeanne Moreau, who is fascinated and betrayed by roulette, as if by the dearest of lovers. In "La Baie des Anges," Jacques Demy has created a pure, clear film, tinged with dark optimism, which is unique in French cinema of the 1960s.
